telc German A1 exam in Hamburg – European Language Certificate at TANDEM Hamburg


The telc Deutsch A1 examination is recognised by the German embassies as proof of basic German language skills. With this, you can apply for a visa within the framework of spousal reunification. Unless otherwise noted, the exam begins at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays at our language school TANDEM Hamburg.

It takes telc around 4–6 weeks to mark the exam. You will then automatically receive your exam results as a PDF via email.

FAQ – telc Deutsch A1

How long does the telc German A1 exam take?

The telc German A1 exam takes place at the TANDEM Hamburg language school over the course of a single day. It begins at 2 pm and usually ends around 5 pm.

The written exam lasts 65 minutes (listening comprehension: approx. 20 minutes, reading and writing: 45 minutes). After a break, the oral exam takes place with 4 candidates (duration approx. 15 minutes, no preparation time)

Where does the exam take place?

The telc German A1 exam takes place at our language school.

✅ Exam venue: TANDEM Hamburg, Steinhöft 5-7, rear building, 20459 Hamburg, 6th floor.

Please arrive punctually 15 minutes before the exam starts, bringing your valid, official photo ID. Anyone arriving after the exam has started will not be permitted to sit the exam.

What am I allowed to bring into the exam room?

✅ Please bring your valid, official photo ID (passport or identity card) with you.

✅ You may bring pencils, pens, pencil sharpeners and erasers into the examination room. 

✅  Drinks may only be brought in transparent bottles WITHOUT labels. Hygiene items such as tissues or medication are permitted.

  Not permitted: You may not take bags, jackets, mobile phones or wristwatches into the exam. These items will be locked away by us for the duration of the entire written exam and will only be returned to you after the exam.

When will I receive my exam results?

The processing time for telc exams is approximately 4–6 weeks

For exams taken after 15 February 2026, the results will be sent automatically as a PDF to your email address. Your exam date will be marked with a yellow star.

Can I retake the telc exam?

You can retake the telc exam as many times as you like. Simply register again with TANDEM Hamburg for another exam date and pay the exam fee.

Can I cancel or reschedule my exam date?

You may cancel or reschedule your exam for a processing fee of €50.00, but only up to the registration deadline.
In this case, please contact us by email. We will be happy to reschedule you for an available exam date or refund your exam fee, minus our processing fee.

What should I do if I fall ill on the day of the exam?

If you fall ill on the day of the exam, please notify us immediately by emailing info@tandem-hamburg.de and provide us with a doctor’s note within 3 days. In this case, we will refund the exam fee, minus an administration fee of €50.00.
