Headset and computer for learning a language

In recent years TANDEM Hamburg has been a partner in a number of projects working on various ways of learning and teaching languages at European level with a focus on special target groups. This work has been awarded with various prizes; most important, however, has been the immense growth of our didactic and methodological competence and expertise in writing curricula. We are very proud of our involvement, which has influenced our programm, e.g. in the shape of our teacher training courses, and which will continue.

We have been successfully involved in the following projects funded by the European Commission: 

VET4VIP (Vocational English Teaching for Visually Impaired People)

European Transversal LINGUA project

December 2009 – May 2012

Development of a train-the-trainer course for language teachers on how to deal with visually impaired people and how to use and create teaching materials for this target group; development of adaptable computer-based training modules for business English designed for blind and visually impaired adult learners. Partnership: 10 partners from 5 countries.

The European Language Label

16 November 2012: Vet4Vip Project Receives European Language Label Award

Vet4Vip was awarded with the European Language Label in the vocational training area. On the 8th of November, Antonio Quatraro from the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired, Mario Paiano from Centro Machiavelli, and Thomas Deharde from the Deutsche Angestellten-Akademie received the award on behalf of the Vet4Vip partnership from the Italian National Agency in Rome. 


AllVip - Accessible Language Learning

The Socrates Project »Accessible Language Learning« (225780-CP-1-200, 2005 to 2007) successfully suggests new possibilities for learning a language to blind and visually impaired people. The combination of force-feedback appliances and 3D sound navigation creates an alternative user interface for a self-guides learning software that works without a screen reader and allows an interactive use of the PC. Here this technology is used for a language course »English for German speaking learners« und »German for English speaking learners«.


ELLVIS - English Language Learning programme for Visually Impaired Students

The project ELLVIS (502249-LLP-1-IT-COMENIUS, 2009 to 2011) also intended to improve the access of visually impaired persons to language learning. As good learning material for visually impaired children is rare, it is essential to create innovative material which opens up new possibilities for this target group and makes it possible for VI children to take part in lifelong learning. We have been partners of institutions in France, Romania, Italy and Germany.

WoCoCom - Works Council Communication

Partnership in planning the linguistic and didactic setup and during implementation of the WoCoCom project "English for Works Councillors" from 1997 to 1999 with participation of institutions in the UK, Germany, Austria, and Denmark. This project received the European Language Seal award for innovative initiatives in the field of language learning and teaching.
