FAQ - Intensive German Courses in Hamburg
How do I register?
You can register using the online registration form on our website. Once we have received your registration for a German Intensive Course, we will send you a link to our online placement test. As soon as we receive your placement test results, we will confirm your registration via email and ask you to transfer the course fee.
How do I know what my level is?
We will send you a link to our online placement test on our website. We offer a placement test for levels A1–B1 and a placement test for levels B2 and C1. Please complete this test—without any help, of course—and send it back to us. You have 30 minutes for the A1–B1 test and 45 minutes for the B2–C1 test. We will then notify you of your test results. If you feel you have been placed in the wrong level, we offer either an oral placement assessment via Zoom or here at our school. Alternatively, you are also welcome to participate in a free trial lesson
When do I need to pay?
After registration, you will receive our confirmation of enrollment with a request to transfer the course fee within 7 days. If you have registered for several months, we are happy to arrange a payment plan. If you would like to pay at our language school, we accept payments in cash, by debit card, and by credit card.
Can I apply for a language visa by enrolling in the intensive course?
Yes, this is easily possible, as our intensive courses, with 20 hours per week, meet the official requirements. On this page, you will find all the important information about the visa process, as well as tips on what to keep in mind when registering for a visa course with us
What is included in the service fee?
Our service fee already includes the placement test and the first textbook. The cultural program is also included. You would be responsible for any admission or transportation costs.
If you are interested in a language exchange partnership, you can search for suitable offers on our TANDEM board or post a request yourself at no additional cost.
Can I also book accommodation through TANDEM?
Yes, you can. We arrange private homestays for the duration of your language course with us. On this page, you’ll find information and prices regarding our accommodation service.
When are my classes?
Our intensive German courses take place Monday through Friday and consist of 20 class hours per week. The intensive courses for levels A2–C1 run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the A1 courses from 2:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., with a short 15-minute break. Note: In Germany, a lesson lasts 45 minutes.
Which coursebooks do I use?
You will need one coursebook per half-level, e.g., A2.1. (= 4-week intensive course). For levels A1–B1, we use the coursebook “Netzwerk neu Hybride Ausgabe.” These coursebooks cost €23.99 per half-level. At levels B2–C1, we use “Kontext Hybrid Ausgabe.” It costs €26.99. Note: The first coursebook is already included in the service fee.
Can I also participate online?
Yes, that’s possible—except for the A1 level. If you’re sick or on vacation, you can let us know 24 hours in advance and we’ll send you a Zoom link. You can then participate in your German class online.
How many weeks does a full level take?
With us, a full level takes a total of eight weeks. We offer five full levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1. For example, if you want to study from A1 to C1, you should book 40 weeks. If you have prior knowledge, please take our online placement test. We can then tell you exactly how many weeks you should book to reach your desired learning goal.
Whether you’re staying for just one week or opting for 40 weeks of classes—you’re always welcome.
Will I take a final exam? Will I receive a certificate?
At the end of each level, we will send you a certificate of completion. This certificate lists the levels you have completed and the number of lessons you have taken.
If you need an official certificate, you can take a telc exam at a special rate. On our website, you can see our exams with available slots. If your desired exam date is already fully booked, please feel free to contact us and we will try to find a solution.
